Info from www.fdlreporter.com The Gottfried Prairie and Arboretum is holding its first native plant sale. Plants from the southeastern region of Wisconsin are available. These plants are well adapted to the local climate and will grow well with minimal care. Since they are plants that were growing here before modern settlement, they provide much needed habitat and food for our insects, butterflies and birds. The Gottfried Prairie and Arboretum has been promoting the use of native plants through their monthly programs, prairie walks, newsletters and radio programs. Researchers have discovered that cultivated plants do not provide the essential nutrients for our native animals. Along with a list of 60 kinds of flowers and grasses to choose from, there are four garden designs to work with. These include two gardens for butterflies, one for drier soils and the other for medium moisture; one rain garden design and another design for shorelines. Connie Ramthun, owner of Kettle Moraine Natural Landscaping and Education Coordinator for the Gottfried, relied on decades of experience with native plants to design the gardens and choose plants suited for the Fond du Lac area. For a list of plants or to order, visit gottfriedprairie.org. Pre-paid orders will be accepted through April 22, and the plants will be ready for pickup at UW Fond du Lac on Saturday, May 14, from 9 a.m. until noon. Soil not ready? Use a sod cutter or spray area with Roundup a few times before planting. The plants can also be kept in their pots until your garden area is ready. Call Ramthun at 920-533-8939 with any questions.
